Morocco’s Aviation Sector Key to Economic Growth

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has emphasized the crucial role of Morocco’s aviation sector in driving economic growth. IATA highlighted the need for smart regulation and cost-effective infrastructure to fully realize the sector’s potential.

Key points from IATA’s assessment:

  1. Strong Growth: Morocco’s aviation sector has experienced significant growth, with passenger numbers increasing by 68% over the past decade to reach 12.4 million in 2023.
  2. Economic Contribution: Travel and tourism contributed USD 25.5 billion to Morocco’s GDP in 2023, accounting for 13.4% of the economy. Aviation also supported the export of goods and services, contributing nearly 44% of Morocco’s GDP.
  3. Future Growth: Morocco’s aviation sector is expected to continue growing, with passenger numbers projected to increase by 50% by 2043.
  4. World Cup Impact: Aviation will play a crucial role in Morocco’s co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
  5. Infrastructure Expansion: Royal Air Maroc plans to quadruple its fleet to 200 aircraft by 2037, while Morocco’s airport capacity is expected to double to over 90 million passengers by 2035.

Consumer Regulation and Sustainability
IATA supports smart regulation and sustainability initiatives in Morocco’s aviation sector. The organization is working with the Moroccan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to develop Passenger Rights Law that reflects global best practices.

Sustainability is also a priority, with RAM expanding its International Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) program and participating in IATA’s CO2 Connect initiative. RAM has also operated its first flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), demonstrating its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Infrastructure Development
Morocco’s ambitious national master plan for airport infrastructure development is fully supported by IATA. The organization emphasizes the importance of sustainable, collaborative planning to ensure timely delivery, enhanced capacity, and cost-effective infrastructure.

IATA also advocates for the adoption of facilitation technologies like One ID and contactless processing to optimize terminal efficiency, improve passenger journeys, and enhance the overall customer experience.
