“Look to the Future, Where the Industry is Headed”

Urvashi Kadam, the Managing Partner at The Revelation Consultancy DMCC, talks about her entrepreneurial journey thus far

Can you share a little bit about what it is that you do and what a typical day for you is like?
I run a Marketing and Public Relations firm that offers consultancy and implementation of Communications programmes to clients across the Middle East & Africa. At any given point in time, we have a number of activities to undertake for various clients with timelines against each.

My typical day begins with a brief meeting with colleagues to go through our agendas for the day so we can cover each other for urgent tasks if required or offer support. This in effect charts my day with the tasks I undertake – analysing research for writing, vetting content created for clients, and outreach to media, vendors, affiliates, and suppliers. Some days are spent at events.

What first got you interested in the industry you work in?
I started my career in a Consulting firm run by a renowned professor at my management school. When I moved to Dubai, I got a job in an advertising agency. This is how I got connected to work in and with the media industry. From advertising, I moved to a media group and then to Public Relations.

What obstacles did you have to overcome?
I have moved from my home country to the UAE and back again at two different periods. Starting out in a new place in new jobs and roles from ground zero at three different times has been challenging.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in the industry you represent? What do you wish you had known?
My advice will be to look to the future – where the industry is headed. The Chairman of a client company in India summed this up with an analogy – the best basketball player is not the one at the place the ball is, but the one who is at the place it is headed.

Who is your role model?
I’ve been inspired by two of my ex-bosses for different reasons. One is Prema Sagar who heads BCW in India and another is Ian Fairservice, founder of the Motivate Media Group.

What do you do to unwind after work or over weekends?
I enjoy spending time with friends and family and am part of a vibrant church community that has a lot of initiatives.
